EL PASO, Texas (AP) â" A driver who hit a broken-down car in an accident that killed two teenagers has been arrested on two counts of intoxication manslaughter, El Paso police said Sunday.
John Cervoni and Aaron Carrillo, both 16, died and their 17-year-old friend, Mark Dobbs, whose car had broken down, was injured after the accident Friday night along Loop 375 in El Paso, police said. Friends said the three were in a Christian rock band and played in a community concert earlier that evening.
Hector Tellez, 32, was booked into the El Paso County Jail late Saturday after being released from the hospital. Tellez remained jailed Sunday on bonds totaling $100,000. Jail records didn't indicate whether he had an attorney.
Tellez was driving on the shoulder of the road when he hit Dobbs' vehicle, which then struck the vehicle Cervoni and Carrillo arrived in, police said. At the time, Carrillo was standing outside the vehicles, while Dobbs was in the driver's seat of his car and Cervoni was in Dobbs' passenger seat.
Carrillo was struck and died at the scene. Cervoni was taken to University Medical Center where he later died. Dobbs was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
On Sunday, hundreds of the teens' friends and families gathered at Eastwood High School to remember Cervoni and Carrillo. The El Paso Times reports that Cervoni was a student at Eastwood, as is Dobbs. Carrillo went to Montwood High School.
The three were members of a Christian rock band that formed last summer called Ancient of Days. Cervoni played guitar, while Carrillo played drums and Dobbs was the vocalist. They played in a community concert Friday evening.
"They loved music and they loved God, so we have to continue to honor them through both," Austin Ramos, 17, a guitarist with the band, told the newspaper for a story published online Saturday.
