FORESTVILLE, Md. - A horrific six-vehicle crash that snarled traffic for hours on the Capital Beltway this morning has claimed two lives and injured two others. Maryland state police are investigating whether drunk driving may have played a role in the accident near Ritchie Marlboro Road.
One of those who died was 41-year-old Candace Hewitt of Davidsonville, Maryland. She was a producer and writer with the Pentagon Channel and worked previously at ABC on Primetime Live.
The other person killed was 31-year-old Rodolfo Amaya of Oxon Hill.
Police took the driver of one of the six cars into custody for questioning on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was not arrested and later released, but police are consulting with the Prince George's County State's Attorney to see if charges should be filed.
Two others were taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were identified as Charline Starks, 50, of Waldorf, Md., and Jose Buevara, 30, of Laurel, Md. Both were transportated to Prince George's Hospital for treatment.
A sixth driver, Linda Pike, 56, of Crofton, Md., was struck by debris from the vehicles crashing around her. She was not injured.
