BELTON â€" A Bell County grand jury indicted a 23-year-old Belton man Wednesday on a charge of intoxicated assault in connection with a March car accident that broke a woman's back and legs.

Matthew Wade Drake could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, said Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe.

The March 25 crash on South Pearl Street in Belton also broke Drake's legs, according to an arrest affidavit. Drake slammed his black Pontiac Firebird into a tree after traveling on the road, which runs parallel to Interstate 35.

The woman hurt in the crash was a passenger in the car. She was found wedged between the passenger's seat and the passenger's side door.

After emergency personnel extracted Drake and the woman from the car, officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Drake. Drake told police he had been drinking, but he claimed he was not driving the vehicle.

The woman remained hospitalized for 25 days as a result of the crash.

She told police the two had been drinking at the Belton Veterans of Foreign Wars post before the accident, the affidavit states.

She told police she believed Drake was traveling between 80 and 100 mph at the time of the accident.

The grand jury also returned indictments against the following:

Akeshia Renee Hemphill, 28, of Temple, on a charge of possession with intent to deliver cocaine, 4 grams or more.

Robert Joseph Apodaca Jr., 22, of Temple, on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Fetina Gail Hardy, 40, of Troy, on a charge of forgery by passing.

Jason Kalahao Lui, 33, of Killeen, on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, less than 1 gram.

Rhonda Lee Marshall, 52, of Salado, on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, less than 1 gram.

Kenneth Wayne Gist, 58, of Eddy, on a charge of possession of morphine, less than 1 gram.
