A Mercedes-Benz allegedly involved in a hit-and-run that killed a Roseville man last week belongs to former Minnesota Vikings star Joe Senser, the family's attorney confirmed Thursday.
"Obviously the Senser family recognizes this is a tremendously tragic incident, and the Senser family has significantly cooperated with the State Patrol in their investigation," said Eric Nelson, an attorney representing the Sensers.
Although the car belongs to Joe Senser, Nelson would not say who was driving.
According to a search warrant signed Wednesday, State Patrol investigators received a call Aug. 24, the day after the accident, from an attorney at Halberg Criminal Defense indicating he was calling on behalf of the registered owner and family of the suspect vehicle.
The hit-and-run crash killed Anousone Phanthavong as he was putting gas in his car on the ramp leading from westbound Interstate 94 to Riverside Avenue at about 11 p.m. Investigators found parts at the scene belonging to a newer Mercedes.
The attorney told the State Patrol to pick up the car from a garage at an Edina address listed as Senser's home.
Investigators noted the Mercedes-Benz ML350 had damage to the front passenger side including the fender, and that there appeared to be blood on the hood.
Inside the car, investigators found a bobby pin, a "Mike's" bottle cap and a set of earrings, according to the warrant.
The car was towed to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office crime lab.
No one is under arrest while the investigation continues, Nelson said. In the meantime, he has been in contact with an attorney for Phanthavong's family to deal with insurance issues.
"Obviously they're sensitive to the tragic nature of the circumstances," Nelson said. "These types of cases have impact that are felt by many, many layers of people."
Senser, 55, played tight end for the Vikings from 1980 to 1984 and was a color commentator for the team. He is now part owner of Joe Senser's Sports Theater restaurants. He has four daughters, including musician Brittani Senser.
