Islanders left winger sued for Stamford accident

STAMFORD -- New York Islanders left winger Matt Moulson is being sued over a car accident in Stamford last year because a Danbury woman says she needs more money than his insurance company offered.

Moulson, one of the leading scorers on the Islanders, was found at fault for a June 18, 2010, accident on the West Side of Stamford in which he tried to turn left and struck the front of an oncoming car, according to a police report included in a news release from Westport law firm Millman, Arons & Millman. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday.

The driver of the oncoming car, Lisa Caiati, 40, was taken to Stamford Hospital via ambulance and still suffers from back and neck problems, including herniated discs and a lumbar strain, said attorney Mark Arons. Mouslon had liability insurance in the amount of $25,000.

Arons turned down the money and is seeking more in state Superior Court in Danbury. He said it does not make sense that a professional athlete under a million-dollar contract would only have $25,000 in liability coverage. Earlier this year Moulson signed a $9.4 million, three-year contract extension with the Islanders, according to ESPN.com.

"I think Moulson should step up the plate and do the right thing," Arons said.

Moulson also registered his 2003 Cadillac Escalade to the address of Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., the home rink for the Islanders, according to his accident report.

A Stamford police officer called to the June 2010 accident determined Moulson was driving east on Selleck Street before making a left-hand turn onto Harvard Avenue and smashing into the front of Caiati's 2000 Suburu Legacy. The officer gave Moulson a verbal warning for failing to grant right of way to Caiati. Moulson told police the car in front of him blocked his view of oncoming traffic, according to the police report.

Calls to the Islanders press office seeking Mouslon's lawyer were not returned Thursday.
