One of two women struck in Haverford driveway dies

HAVERFORD â€" One of two women who were run over when an 89-year-old man accidentally backed his car over them in the driveway of their home has died.

The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of Harrington Road. 89-year-old George Metzger was in the driver’s seat of his car waiting as his daughter Gail, 62, helped his wife into the front passenger seat.

Metzger accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal, sending the car backward, striking the two women, police said.

Both Gail and her mother Rose, 85, were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where Gail died Tuesday, police said.

Rose Metzger remains hospitalized. Her condition was unavailable. Her husband was also treated at a hospital.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, but police do not anticipate filing charges.
