Third delay in trial for accused drunk driver frustrates family

CREATED Sep. 16, 2011

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV)-It's been three and a half years since two teenagers died in a car accident. Police say the driver was drunk and now the mother of one those victims wants to know why it's taking so long for the case to go to court.

This is the third delay in the trial of that acused drunk driver which means it could be at least 4 years before she stands before a jury.

"Jury selection was supposed to start on Monday, then as soon as that was done we were supposed to go to trial," says Katie Steele.

Steele is talking about the trial of Lacy Ambro. Ambro is accused of driving drunk in an accident that killed two of three passengers in her car. One of the victims was Steele's daughter Zoey Roanoke. More than 3 years after the accident, Ambro's trial was scheduled to begin this week.

"You start to try to mentally prepare yourself for that, so it's been a really difficult month or so just getting ready for that," says Steele.

But Steele got a call Thursday morning telling her a judge had granted the withdrawal of Ambro's attorney from the case, because he is her uncle.

"This morning I was really emotional about it, and really sad, and really upset, and after it sunk in a little more, I got angry," says Steele.

"Unfortunately the only thing that was really left unanswered was why in the heck this attorney didn't move to withdraw two or three years ago. I mean he knew that the lady was his niece," says Bruce Nelson, Deputy District Attorney with Vehicular Crimes Unit.

"It's complete crap. The judge should have done something a long time ago," says Cathy Griczen.

She was the third passenger in the car. She spent 11 days in the hospital after the crash.

"We all want to move on with our lives and this isn't helping," she says.

What would help, say these victims, is to see Ambro locked up.

We did reach out to Lacey Ambro's new attorney for a comment on the delays, but did not hear back from him. The new anticipated trial date is February 6, 2012.
