Attorney general honors fallen police officers

<p>MONTGOMERY â€" Attorney General Luther Strange on Thursday honored three police officers who died in the line of duty this year.</p><p>At the 12th annual Attorney General's Law Enforcement Summit in Birmingham, Strange honored Justin Sollohub of Anniston, Trevor Scott Phillips of Tuscaloosa and Donald Newman of Jemison.</p><p>“I am grateful and proud of the bravery and unselfish dedication that law enforcement officers give to people of Alabama in their service to us each day,” Strange said in a statement released by his office.</p><p>Memorial flags were presented to members of the officers' families.</p><p>Sollohub, 27, died Aug. 25 after being shot in the head while chasing a suspect the day before. He was kept on life support until his organs could be donated. The man who allegedly shot him was charged with capital murder.</p><p>Phillips, 42, died May 21 when the motorcycle he was riding while escorting a funeral procession collided with a car that had made a U-turn from the procession line. Phillips had more than 10 years of service, was a member of the Tuscaloosa Police Department's special response team and had worked in the traffic division since July 2007. No charges were filed in the accident.</p><p>Newman, 30, died March 5 when his patrol car hydroplaned during a heavy rain and hit a utility pole. He was en route to another accident that involved children, officials said. Newman had been with the Jemison Police Department for a little more than two years and was a military police officer for six years.</p>
