Fitchburg crash victim identified

FITCHBURG -- The Worcester County District Attorney's office has identified the driver killed in a fiery car crash early Thursday as 33-year-old Charlotte Smith, of Fitchburg.

Tim Connolly, a spokesman with the DA's office, confirmed Smith's identity Monday afternoon.

Smith, who was living in an apartment at 125 East St., would have celebrated her 34th birthday later this month.

She was driving a 2005 Subaru Legacy, traveling north on Pearl Hill Road and failed to negotiate the curve into Fisher Road, police said.

Her car left the road, skidded more than 100 feet and struck a wooden fence before striking a boulder and bursting into flames.

There were no passengers in the car, officials said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and the car was removed by Aldrich Auto Body & Repair on Lunenburg Street for storage.

Residents at the scene of the accident described "a huge ball of flame" so intense they couldn't tell if there was a car inside it.

Dennis De Gara, who has lived at 400 Fisher Road for more than 20 years, said it was the 10th car to have landed in his yard as a result of accidents. He said the other nine passengers were able to walk away.

He said the impact of the crash moved the huge boulder approximately 4 feet.

Connolly said the accident is still under investigation by state police.
