Husker Volleyball Player Lauren Cook Suspended from Weekend Matches

Nebraska Head Volleyball Coach John Cook issued the following statement regarding junior Lauren Cook.

Statement from Nebraska Volleyball Coach John Cook:

“I have made the decision that Lauren Cook will not play in our matches this weekend against Michigan and Michigan State. As the legal system continues to progress, we will make further determination on Lauren’s playing status. Lauren is still a member of our program and will continue to train and practice with our team.”

"Lauren is still a member of our program and will continue to train and practice with our team."

Cook is facing two charges, a Class 3-A felony for Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, and Operating with a Suspended License.

Lincoln police say just before noon Sunday, Cook was driving a black SUV that hit a motorcycle parked along the 1800 block of Humphrey Avenue.

Police say the male motorcycle driver and his female passenger were also hit.

The driver suffered a broken leg and the passenger had scrapes and cuts.

Police say Cook never stopped to check for damage or injuries.

Officer Katie Flood says, six minutes later, Cook called police about a mile from the scene to say her tire was shredded and she had been in an accident.

A couple years ago, the penalty for leaving the scene of an injury accident was increased, making the charges more serious.

"Lawmakers thought it was necessary at injury accidents, that people were required to stay at the scene to check for injuries and also to leave their name. There is an expectation for people that have the privilege of driving to stop and render aid if needed," said LPD Officer Katie Flood.

Later Monday morning, her father, Head Coach John Cook explained the circumstances surrounding the crash at a news conference with reporters. "We got home at 3 in the morning from Penn State. Some of our players get up and go to treatment just like the football team does it all happens around 11:45. Lauren got up and is headed to the stadium, there was an accident, she was not pulled over by the police, she stopped and called 911. So she tried to do the right thing. There was no alcohol, no drugs, she was not texting, and in no way is this an excuse but an accident happened and we'll let the legal process go through that," said John Cook.

According to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, In Nebraska if you are under 21 and accumulate 6 points, your license is suspended unless you take a driving course.

Cook accumulated 6 points and on July 1 was given notice that she needed to take the course by October 3rd.

According to the DMV, she did not take the course and her license was suspended.

It will be suspended until she takes the course and pays a reinstatement fee.

Cook's court appearance was postponed.

They Lancaster County Attorney's office is investigating the case before deciding how to charge Cook.

If charged and convicted on the felony count, Cook is facing up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

She needs to be in jail. Like any other person would be. I guess it didn't work To keep her close to home. So what she doesn't get the play In a volleyball game. The guy she hit on the motorcycle Is lucky to be alive.

Good decision coach. There comes a point in everyone's life when you realize it's time to grow up. Hopefully this is the wake-up call Lauren needs to realize this. Many young adults seem to have a lackluster regard for the law and the consequences of their actions.
