Coughlin’s attorney arrested before hearing

PANAMA CITY â€" A hearing for the woman charged in the death of her 12-year-old daughter was delayed Friday after her lawyer was arrested earlier that morning.

Courtney Coughlin was arrested in July after her daughter Kaylee Rice was killed in a car accident while fleeing Lynn Haven Police, who had chased her because they suspected her of check fraud, according to authorities.

Coughlin was in court for the hearing, along with prosecutor Bob Sombathy and Judge Michael Overstreet. However, Robert Boyette, Coughlin’s attorney, was not present. Boyette had been arrested the previous night and was in jail awaiting his bond hearing.

Boyette was arrested early Friday by the Florida Highway Patrol on charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a breath test, according to records at the Bay County Jail, where he was booked. Details of the arrest were not available Friday.

Boyette could not be reached for comment Friday night.

Coughlin’s hearing was continued to Jan. 3.

She was going nearly 90 miles per hour when she passed through a red light at 26th Street and smashed into another car, the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigative report says. Coughlin and the other driver, a 17-year-old male, also sustained serious injuries.
