Joshua Meigs, 21, of 17 Winter St., was riding north on Summer Street just after 2 p.m. Friday when he collided with a car, according to Timothy Connolly, spokesman for the Worcester district attorneyâs office. The driver had turned right onto Summer Street from Boutelle Street, and the biker struck the front end of the car, causing the car to slide into a second car.
Police believe the victim, who wore a helmet, was driving at a high rate of speed. Mr. Meigs was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither of the drivers of the cars was injured. Mr. Connolly said police are investigating the crash, but that charges are not expected to be filed.
In a separate accident, a pedestrian was struck by a car in the crosswalk at Lunenburg (Route 2A) and Townsend streets about 9:15 last night.
Joseph T. Caisse, 48, of Fitchburg, was driving a 1998 Buick on Lunenburg Street when he struck a woman, 48, of Townsend Street, in the crosswalk, according to Sgt. Glenn Fossa. The driver left the scene, but there were several witnesses, police said.
The woman, who suffered serious injuries, was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center â" University Campus in Worcester, where she remains today.
Officer Paul McNamara, a traffic specialist for Fitchburg Police, and Detective Dean Romano are investigating the accident. Charges against the driver will likely be filed, according to Sgt. Fossa.
