SYCAMORE â" The Sycamore woman charged with reckless homicide stemming from a February fatal car accident that left two dead pleaded not guilty Monday to the 18 charges she is facing.
Patricia L. Schmidt, 46, of the 28500 block of Brickville Road, was indicted by a grand jury Friday at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore. She is facing 18 counts: two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated reckless driving and 14 counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs.
Schmidt is charged with the deaths of Timothy T. Getzelman, 21, of Sycamore, and his girlfriend, Alexis Y. Weber, 21, of Maple Park. The couple was traveling east on Peace Road on Feb. 21 when Schmidt, traveling south on North Main Street, struck Getzelmanâs vehicle on the driverâs side; witnesses said Getzelman had the right of way. Getzelman and Weber were killed.
Results from the Illinois State Police crime lab analysis of Schmidt's blood show the presence of the drugs lorazepam, phenobarbital, mephobarbital, propranolol, venlafaxine and norvenlafaxine.
She was arraigned on the charges Monday. An arraignment is a formal reading of the charges that a person faces; it is also the time when a suspect often enters a plea.
Reckless homicide is a Class 3 felony, punishable by up to five years in prison; aggravated reckless driving is a Class 4 felony, punishable by up to three years in prison; and aggravated driving under the influence of drugs is a Class 2 felony, punishable by not less than six years but not more than 28 years in prison, because two or more people were killed.
Schmidt's attorney Jonathan Minkus requested a jury trial, which is set to begin Dec. 12.
