Two teens killed in car accident

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. -- Two teens were killed in a car accident in Stanly County Wednesday night after they were thrown from the Jeep they were riding in.

The driver of the 1997 Jeep swerved to avoid hitting a deer off of Cottonville Road in Stanly County, according to police.  Passengers Hunter Mauldin and Austin Burleson were killed when they were thrown from the Jeep.

Authorities said 16-year-old Jordan Carpenter was driving the Jeep when the accident happened. Carpenter told police when he swerved to miss the deer he over-corrected and flipped the Jeep.

Mauldin, 16, and  Burleson, 15, were not wearing seat belts when the accident occurred. Carpenter was taken to the hospital but his status is still unknown.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said charges may be filed against Carpenter.

He was driving with a restricted  license and was only supposed to have one person under the age of 21 in the car.

The Highway Patrol has turned the case over to the Stanly County District Attorney.
