Young man killed in fiery Marshfield crash

An 18-year-old Marshfield man was killed early Saturday in a fiery crash near 500 Highland Street, near the Spring Street intersection  in  North Marshfield.

Michael Harrington was a senior at Marshfield High School who enjoyed skateboarding, drawing, and spending time with friends, his mother, Marie Harrington, said.

“I want people to remember him for the person he is, not the accident," she said  when  reached at a relative's house on Sunday  night.

Harrington  said she  attended a vigil at the crash site Saturday night with to 30 of her son's classmates. She said she was  amazed by the support .

The accident remains under investigation by state and local police. Bridget Middleton, spokeswoman for the Plymouth County District Attorney's office said a positive identification will not be made until after an autopsy.

Marshfield police said  the car was traveling west on Highland Street when it went off the road about 4:39 a.m.  Saturday  and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire.

Highland Street is hilly and winding in  sections..

 Police and fire officials  found the young man dead when they arrived, Marshfield police said.

Nearby residents on Highland Street said they heard the sound of the crash near a pond on the street but did not realize what had happened.  

 State Police from the Plymouth County District Attorney's office are working with Det. Michael Egan of the Marshfield police on the investigation and accident reconstruction.

A section of the road was shut down for several hours as state and local police reconstructed the scene and waited for the arrival of the medical examiner’s office. 

There were no other victims of the single car crash, police said.
