Marshfield police piecing together events preceding fatal car crash

Marshfield police said they are piecing together a timeline of events preceding the death of 18-year-old Michael Harrington, the Marshfield High School senior who was killed in a fiery, one-car accident early Saturday morning.

“We’re looking at all the factors that could possibly be involved, including alcohol and speeding,” Capt. Phil Tavares said Monday.

On Sunday night, Marie Harrington, Michael’s mother, told The Patriot Ledger that her son was a good kid who made a bad choice.

Investigators said Harrington spent most of his Friday night out of town before he stopped briefly at his Forest Street home early Saturday morning.

At about 4:40 a.m., Harrington’s car, which police said was registered to a family member, went off the road near 500 Highland St., struck a tree and caught fire. The accident occurred about a mile from his Forest Street home.

Harrington was dead when police and firefighters arrived. No one else was hurt in the crash, police said.

There were no witnesses to the accident, but several residents on Highland Street told police they heard the crash from inside their homes.

Tavares said the autopsy results and an accident-reconstruction report from the State Police will help advance the investigation.

Tavares also said his department, working with the Plymouth County district attorney’s office, is exploring a possible violation of the Social Host Law â€" a state statute that holds adults accountable for allowing underage drinking.
